Days after he made perhaps the catch of the season by running through the outfield wall at Dodger Stadium, Yankees slugger Aaron Judge is headed to the injured list.
The reigning American League MVP will head to the IL after being diagnosed with a contusion and a sprain of the ligament in his right big toe, Yankees manager Aaron Boone announced on Tuesday.
Judge made the jaw-dropping catch during Saturday’s 6-3 win over Los Angeles. He remained in the game, but has not been in the lineup since. Boone said Tuesday that there is no fracture in Judge’s foot, and that he received a PRP injection. The primary issue facing Judge and the medical staff is to reduce swelling in the area. Boone told reporters that the team would see where things stood “in the coming weeks, or days,” and offered no further details on how long Judge is expected to be out.
“It definitely could have been worse,” Boone said, per NYDN’s Gary Phillips. “Feel like he’s gonna be alright, just needs some time now. Hopefully, it’s on the shorter side of things, but the biggest thing is getting the swelling out of there.”
This will be Judge’s second stint on the IL this season after missing 10 games earlier with a strained hip. Since returning, Judge hit .325/.457/.855 with 13 home runs in 23 games. He has 19 homers and 40 RBIs in 49 games on the year.
