While New York Yankees pitcher Nestor Cortes was very solid on the mound against the Phillies on Monday, giving up just one run in his five innings of work, it was a play he made behind the plate that had MLB fans in awe. It also happened to result in the final out of his night and stopped the Phillies from possibly putting some more runs on the board.
With two outs in the fifth inning, Phillies catcher J.T. Realmuto hit a single to right. New York’s Franchy Cordero fired a ball to home plate that sailed over catcher Jose Trevino’s head. Thankfully for the Yankees, Cortes was exactly where he should have been—backing up Trevino—and made this incredibly smart play after catching the wild throw:
Amazing heads up play by Nestor to cut down the runner at third to end the inning! pic.twitter.com/wRXmt7joML

That's pretty awesome.

Always know where the next play is. Don’t get caught watching. Sound familiar? Textbook defense by @Cortes_1210 https://t.co/4KMnD1t8UD

Young pitchers, your job doesn’t end when the ball leaves your hand. You can make your self SO much more valuable to a high school or college team by being prepared for any situation. https://t.co/KgOlyXWJXr
