The Yankees announced Wednesday that starting pitcher Domingo Germán voluntarily submitted himself to inpatient treatment for alcohol abuse and was placed on the Restricted List.
“Domingo Germán has agreed today to voluntarily submit to inpatient treatment for alcohol abuse,” the team said in a statement issued Wednesday. “He will be placed on the Restricted List for the time that he is away from the club. It is critical that Domingo completely focuses on addressing his health and well-being. We will respect his privacy as he begins this process.”
Germán pitched for New York as recently as Monday. He was the scheduled starter for the Yankees in their clash against the Rays but was scratched due to “armpit discomfort” and ended up pitching five scoreless innings out of the bullpen.
Speaking to reporters, Yankees GM Brian Cashman stated that Germán would not pitch again this season, describing it as a very serious situation, per MLB.com’s Bryan Hoch.
The right-hander owns a 4.56 ERA across 20 appearances this season with 19 starts and has struck out 114 batters over 108 2/3 innings. In June, he threw the 24th perfect game in MLB history and fourth in Yankees history during an 11–0 win against the Athletics.
In May, Germán was suspended 10 games due to a violation of MLB’s foreign substance policy.
The 30-year-old is in his sixth season in New York and has spent his entire MLB career with the Yankees.
