Consumer data getting hacked is nothing new, but strangely, it's more common in the powersports industry than most would think. Last year, there was a claim from a hacking group that consumer data had been stolen from Harley-Davidson, and in 2024, Kawasaki Motors Europe confirmed that there was a cyberattack on its servers. This time, hackers went for Yamaha Motor.
Yamaha Motor Co. announced that there was a cyberattack on one of its contractors' servers. It's possible that the attack exposed the personal information of around 1,600 people, specifically members of the company's electric-assist bicycle community website. The breach stemmed from unauthorized access to servers operated by a Tokyo-based company contracted to manage the site, Commune.
