Men taking denosumab, sold as Xgeva, for prostate cancer that has spread to the bones may want to raise a specific question at the one-year mark: is continuing still worth it? A large study published Oct. 21, 2026, in JAMA Network Open linked treatment beyond 12 months to a much higher risk of a serious jaw bone problem without added protection against fractures and other bone complications.
The findings come from 3,307 men in South Korea with castration-resistant prostate cancer that had spread to the bone. They do not mean anyone should stop treatment on their own. Xgeva is used to help prevent fractures and other bone complications from cancer that has spread, and the authors called for an individual review of treatment, not a fixed stopping point.
