X Factor's Raign now - furious Cheryl clash to number one hit and Vampire Diaries star

The X Factor has seen some dire and cringe-worthy auditions over the years - and one that everyone wishes they could forget is that of Reign.

Reign immediately got off on the wrong foot during her performance in front of judges Simon Cowell, Louis Walsh, Mel B and Cheryl Cole in 2014.

She sang Clarity by Zedd but her voice trembled and the notes seemed too high for her, and the judges rolled their eyes and looked unimpressed.

"Can I be honest with you? You didn't sing the song well," Simon told her.

"Really?" Raign asked, looking confused.

"It's an audition I've heard a thousand times before," the SyCo mogul continued.

"I don't think I've ever heard anyone sound like me before, Simon," Raign interjected, before telling him he was being unfair.

As Mel B began to say no, Raign began listing off all the ways she had been preparing for the audition and telling the Spice Girl not to judge her.

Simon gave his no, and Raign said: "Okay Simon, I'm sorry."

"Why are you sorry? asked Cheryl, as dramatic, combative music played in the background.

"I'm sorry I didn't impress him, I really wanted to impress Simon, he was the most important person for me to impress," replied the singer.

Cheryl gave a blunt "no" - and things turned very awkward.

Raign demanded she change her mind, telling her the decision was "not fair" and begging her to reconsider.

Cheryl informed the hopeful that it was her poor attitude that had cemented the rejection, calling her "not likeable", while Simon branded Raign a "nightmare" as she marched out of the studio.

Moments later - Raign was back demanding another shot, this time singing a song she wrote herself called Don't Let Me Go.

Simon eventually buckled and let Raign sing again - and her second performance was indeed much better, giving her enough yeses to get through to the second round.

Sadly, Raign didn't make it any further than boot camp as competition was tough that year and she was dumped before she could reach the judges' houses stage.

Ben Haenow would go on to win the series.

But despite being one of the 'cringe' auditionees who usually fade into obscurity, Raign found international success when Don't Let Me Go was played as part of the soundtrack to hit TV show The Vampire Diaries.

She also covered Wicked Games by Chris Isaak, and her version was used in numerous TV shows including Dancing On Ice and America's Got Talent.

Her songs have also been played in the fantasy series Legacies and sci-fi drama The 100.

In 2015, the use of her track Knocking on Heaven's Door in The 100 was voted Best Use of Music by audiences in the Entertainment Weekly TV Season Finale Awards.

Raign, whose mother was also a singer, went on to release more of her own music and even landed a number one single in Russia with her collaboration with dance act Swanky Tunes - a song called Fix Me.

In the music video for her song A Queen's Head, Raign lies down covered in nothing but a sheer veil and bedazzled eye mask alongside several other scantily-clad women.

She's also worked as a songwriter for huge stars including Rita Ora, Jesse McCartney and Tulisa, and her debut album SIGN came out in 2018.

According to Raign's Instagram, she's now mum to a little boy and lives in the UK where she's created her own clothing brand.
