Wyndford flats denied listed status in blow for tenants hoping to stop demolition

Residential tower blocks facing demolition in the north of the city will not be given listed status following a review by Historic Environment Scotland.

Campaigners had hoped that the heritage watchdog would grant the four blocks in Wyndford listed status in a bid to save them from demolition.

Wheatley Homes Glasgow has proposed razing the flats to the ground and replacing them with 300 new homes. Following a consultation with the tenants, 85% backed the regeneration plans, with 87% of tenants living in the four blocks earmarked for demolition also supporting the proposals.

However, Wyndford Resident's Union is opposing the demolition of the blocks on Wyndford Road and has received backing from two leading architects who believe the buildings could be retained.

Historic Environment Scotland has now concluded that the buildings are not of "special architectural or historic interest".

Their report added: "We assessed the four high-rise blocks at Wyndford Road, Maryhill. Our assessment found that the buildings do not meet the criteria of special architectural or historic interest required for listing.

“While the blocks have some importance in the context of post-war housing provision, our assessment concludes that they are not early, unusual or rare examples of their building type, and that they have also been substantially remodelled.”

Wheatley Homes Glasgow has welcomed the decision.

The social landlord has set out plans to invest £73 million in the community, including building hundreds of new net-zero, new-build homes and green spaces.

Plans will see the four outdated and unpopular blocks, which are made up of bedsits and one-bedroom flats, demolished and replaced by 255 new larger homes for social rent and 45 properties for mid-market.

Wheatley Homes Glasgow tenant Chair Bernadette Hewitt said: “This decision will be warmly welcomed by the overwhelming majority of tenants at Wyndford who are fully behind our plans to invest £73 million transforming their community.

“At every stage of this process, the voice and wishes of tenants needs to be heard. Tenants have told us they want larger, family homes built in Wyndford which are more energy-efficient and cheaper to run.

“The tenants’ Future Focus group will now double its efforts and work with award-winning architects to help shape the exciting plans for the new-look community.”
