WWE superstar Alexa Bliss has revealed she was recently diagnosed with skin cancer and issued a warning about the impact of tanning.
The 31-year-old has not been seen in the ring since failing to take the Raw Women's Championship from Bianca Belair at the Royal Rumble in January. Earlier this week, the five-time women’s champion revealed she had undergone a biopsy on a facial spot that turned out to be a basal cell carcinoma.
"There was a spot on my face yes - that had gotten worse,” the grappler wrote. “So I went to get a biopsy. Was basal cell carcinoma.” Bliss added: "During my procedure the doc also found other squamous cells, it was a quick and easy procedure. Glad I always get my skin checked."
Along with a snap of where she had the procedure, she took to Twitter to announce she has now been given the all-clear. "Dear younger me, you should have stayed out of tanning beds,” Bliss began. All clear now though! Thank you American Skin Institute for taking care of me!”
According to the Skin Care Foundation, 3.6million cases of basal cell carcinoma are diagnosed every year, but it is curable if detected and treated early. Bliss also mentioned that doctors discovered other squamous cells during their tests, which are often a consequence of too much UV light.
"Don’t worry, short healing time. Always get your skin checked!," Bliss said. "Especially if you are in the sun or use tanning beds! Lol." Since her last appearance on WWE programming, Bliss has featured on the American version of popular TV show The Masked Singer.
On its latest episode, the 2018 Money in the Bank winner was the celebrity under the guise of Axolotl, with panellist Jenny McCarthy Wahlberg correctly guessing her identity. WWE’s second-ever Women's Triple Crown Champion was delighted to have appeared on the show and pleased to conquer one of her biggest fears.
"This was something personal for me because I have actually crippling stage fright when it comes to singing," Alexa said. "I actually cried backstage before coming out here because I was just so nervous. But I am just so proud of myself because I conquered my fear."
Further commenting on her Masked Singer experience, Bliss added on Instagram: “Oh man, what can I say…WHAT AN AMAZING journey! So many people have helped me conquer my BIGGEST FEAR of all- SINGING In front of people!!! (Which is completely different from tequila rapping Eminem songs).
“First, thank you to @wwe & @maskedsingerfox for this amazing opportunity - the masked singer has been hands down one of the most amazing & fun moments of my entire career.”
