Wrexham ’s Hollywood co-owners Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds watched on as their team came from behind to beat National League title rivals Notts County 3-2 at the Racecourse Ground.
A second half goal by Paul Mullin cancelled out Premier League flop John Bostock’s emphatic free-kick. Jacob Mendy then handed Wrexham the lead, but the one-goal advantage lasted just six minutes as County captain Kyle Cameron stabbed home 15 minutes from time.
A defensive disaster-class then handed Wrexham an opportunity to retake the lead, Mullin teed up Elliot Lee and the ex-West Ham man made no mistake with the finish. New signing and former Premier League goalkeeper, Ben Foster, then had to come to Wrexham’s rescue in stoppage time, saving a dramatic last minute penalty that would’ve seen the two teams end the day level on 101 points with Notts County leading on goal difference.
McElhenney and Reynolds cut cool figures before kick-off but like the thousands of diehard Wrexham fans inside the Racecourse, they went through a load of different emotions from minute one to 90, and the game has forced It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia star McElhenney to make an admission in the aftermath of the late drama.
“I can’t believe there was a time when I thought football was boring,” McElhenney tweeted on Twitter. He then added: “And that’s why you go get Ben Foster.”
The win has placed Wrexham three points ahead of Notts County with four games left and they also hold a game in hand over their National League title rivals.
Reynolds and McElhenney’s stay at Wrexham isn’t set to end any time soon. In fact, Reynolds is reportedly set to buy a $1.85million (£1.5m) house in a small Welsh village.
It will be a stark contrast from the Deadpool star's £4.3 million in the Big Apple, where he lives with actress wife Blake Lively and their four children.
"Ryan is moving to Marford and it’s all the locals can talk about. His house is on the poshest road," a source told The Sun. "The most famous person from Marford is Tim Vincent from Blue Peter, so a Hollywood star is a step up! It might not be the Big Apple but the red carpet will be rolled out when Ryan comes to town.”
