Wrexham AFC owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney have launched a Welsh rarebit cookbook

Hollywood stars Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney have launched a new recipe book celebrating one of Wales' most famous dishes. The actors and co-owners of Wrexham AFC have released the football club's official cookbook, '20 Ways to Make Rarebit', which contains "inspired recipes for fans around the world".

Deadpool star Reynolds announced the pair's new venture on Twitter to mark National Welsh Rarebit Day, which is celebrated annually on September 3. The book is available to purchase on the club's website, with all profits going to a local foodbank.

The book release comes just days after the launch of a documentary following the actors' £2m takeover of the National League club and subsequent push for promotion. You can read our review of Welcome to Wrexham here.

Promoting the tongue-in-cheek book in a video, Reynolds and McElhenney said: "This National Welsh Rarebit Day, we're proud to announce Wrexham AFC's official cookbook, '20 Ways to Make Rarebit'. It's everything you ever wanted to know about rarebit. Like, what is rarebit?"

The book promises "international spins" on the Welsh delicacy, which consists of a melted cheese sauce with spices served over slices of toasted bread. The twists include English rarebit, topped with baked beans, Swedish rarebit, garnished with pickled herring, and Mexican rarebit, served with salsa. There's also American rarebit finished with a squirt of ketchup, Indian rarebit smeared with mango chutney and Dutch rarebit topped with Stroopwafels. Reynolds sarcastically added: "[It's] a cookbook that's definitely not the same recipe on every page other than the garnish."

The Wrexham co-chairmen encouraged their global fanbase to "take a rare bite out of Welsh history as you cheer on the Red Dragons, wherever you are. In a note from the authors, the pair added that their mission was to "support the team and local community both on and off the pitch", with all profits from the book, which is available to buy here, going to Wrexham Foodbank.

Fans were delighted by the actors' new project, with one asking: "Is there no end to your talents?". Another replied to the video saying: "Ooh tasty, go Wrexham," while a third added: "Can't beat a bit of rarebit!".

Some even put forward more ideas for twists on the Welsh classic. "If it's not included already, the Canadian version must be cheese curds and maple syrup," said one, while another wrote: "I'm assuming the Australian one is just a massive dollop of Vegemite?". One person asked: "Is there a Brazilian rarebit?," to which another Twitter user cheekily replied: "There is, but there's nothing on it."
