'Wow' - Jamie Carragher left stunned by Nick Pope red card for Newcastle against Liverpool

Jamie Carragher was left stunned by a calamitous piece of goalkeeping by Nick Pope that saw the England international sent off against Liverpool.

Jurgen Klopp's Reds were already two goals to the good at St James' Park when Alisson Becker attempted to launch a Liverpool counter attack with a big punt up the pitch. Magpies 'keeper Pope rush out to try and deal with the danger - but after face-planting the ball on the slide, he instinctively handled it well outside is penalty area.

It left referee Anthony Taylor with no choice but to give Pope a straight red card, not only leaving Newcastle with 10 men, but ruling Pope out of the Toon's first cup final in 24 years next week against Manchester United in the Carabao Cup at Wembley.

The bizarre turn of events left Sky Sports co-commentator Jamie Carragher stunned.

Carragher said: "I mean wow. It comes from one goalkeeper and ends with another. That all comes from Alisson and the run from Mo Salah, when he sees him coming he’s just done something, oh....that is an absolute nightmare for Newcastle. Going to be a nightmare for this game as well, in maybe being a contest.

"Just a moment of madness. You feel for the lad, he’s been absolutely fantastic for Newcastle, but this fella has been fantastic for Liverpool for the last five years, and that’s one of the reasons why. How many times has he found Mo Salah with passes like that over the years? You just see he gets involved, diving, and just that moment it hits his hand there.

"Boy, will he regret that. I mean there’s no doubt about the decision, when he’s kicking it away he knows. Look, you can see it on his face. I must say, I am gutted for the lad. It is the right decision, it happens, but I’m absolutely gutted for him. Seeing him coming in today he’s been a huge part of this renaissance at Newcastle, he’s been performing as well as any goalkeeper in this division, and we all know how big next week is for Newcastle. To have one of your best players missing, but listen, it’s football, it happens."
