Since his January arrival, it's fair to say that Wout Weghorst hasn’t had the impact most Manchester United fans would have hoped for, with the Burnley loanee failing to score in his first seven Premier League games for the club. However, manager Erik ten Hag has clearly seen something he likes in the Dutchman.
Weghorst has featured in every match for United since his arrival on loan from Burnley - he was not registered in time to make his debut in the Manchester derby on January 14 - so it is clear that Ten Hag is a fan of his compatriot.
His ability to bring others into play has been a key feature of United's performances, with his hold-up and movement allowing teammates the space and time they need to flourish. High-flying Marcus Rashford has scored all of his last five United goals whilst Weghorst has been on the pitch, highlighting the loanee’s impact on his attacking partners.

Despite the stereotype that he's a one-dimensional target man, Weghorst has been a very versatile player for Ten Hag, highlighted by his displays in the No.10 role. This is why the likes of Rashford and the returning Jadon Sancho are having such a positive impact, with United’s wide players able to stretch the pitch and occupy more advanced positions.
Weghorst has averaged 1.1 key passes per game for United, more than both Rashford and Antony who both average 0.7 per game. When Weghorst is playing as the focal point he is there to do the dirty work, press from the front, occupy multiple defenders and make unselfish runs, the kind of player every team needs.
Weghorst’s temporary spell at United will come to an end this summer, but due to his surprising impact since arriving, Ten Hag should seriously consider trying to extend the forward's time at Old Trafford.
United hope to make a statement signing in the summer, with Napoli’s Victor Osimhen and Tottenham's Harry Kane at the top of their list. It is clear that Weghorst would not be a marquee signing, but with his parent club Burnley possibly set to move him on in the summer, it could be a great opportunity for Ten Hag to add a reliable option to his United squad.
Anthony Martial could be moved on this summer, so more than one forward signing for United looks inevitable, and with Weghorst fitting in so well since his arrival, perhaps Ten Hag would be wise to stick with what he knows.
Weghorst’s passion is undeniable, with his reaction to United’s Carabao Cup victory demonstrating how happy he is at present. Signing a player who knows the club, knows what's expected of him and would be unlikely to kick up a fuss when asked to play back-up to a new arrival might not be a bad idea.
It’s a deal that just makes sense.
