'Would be unreal' — Manchester United fans excited about Robin van Persie job speculation

Manchester United fans are excited at the prospect of seeing Robin van Persie back at Old Trafford amid reports he’s being considered for a coaching role.

The former striker, of course, holds some fond memories of Old Trafford, having fired United to their most recent Premier League title in 2013. Having made the move from Arsenal the previous year, the Dutchman scored 26 league goals to guide United to their 20th league crown.

Reports over the past week have suggested Van Persie could be set make his return to Old Trafford next season. Rumours are abound that the former Netherlands international is being lined up as part of Erik ten Hag’s coaching staff next season.

United look to be closing in on Ten Hag as their new manager, having interviewed him for the role last month. Although the club insist they’re yet to make a final decision, they intend on having their appointment wrapped up before the end of the season.

According to the Daily Mail, former United assistant Steve McClaren is expected to become Ten Hag’s No. 2, while Van Persie is said to be considering an offer to join the current Ajax boss’ backroom staff. The 38-year-old currently works as striker coach for Eredivisie side Feyenoord.

There have been varying reports over Van Persie’s position, with some claims that he has already turned down the chance to join Ten Hag at United. Should he choose to return to Old Trafford though, he’d get a warm reception from the fans judging by the reaction on social media. This is what they said:

Ten Hag’s appointment looks to be edging nearer, with Ajax expecting the 52-year-old to become United’s new manager. Despite the recent developments, though, the Dutchman was in no mood to answer questions on his future on Saturday.

"We are busy with training and with the matches," Ten Hag told ESPN after his side's 2-1 win over Sparta Rotterdam. “That way you keep the focus on it. I want to talk about the game and not about other things and whether or not I've had conversations. I won't comment on rumours.”
