Worry for the high street as 'popular and loved' cafe in Mapperley set to close

People in Mapperley have expressed concern over the future of the high street after it was announced a “popular and loved” cafe is to close. It comes after the owners of Holy Cannoli, on Mapperley Top, announced on Facebook that the cafe will shut on September 24.

In a statement on Facebook, they said: "Sadly Holy Cannoli is closing down on the 24th September. We want to extend our thanks to all the loyal customers who have supported us over the years we’ve been open.

"This fantastic journey wouldn’t have been possible without you all. However, after sincere thought and consideration, we have made the decision to close our doors.”

People in Mapperley, meanwhile, said they were concerned that, due to the cost of living crisis, other businesses may have no choice but to close. However, despite this, the reasons for the closure of Holy Cannoli remain unclear.

Mapperley resident Kennedy Doyle, who is 28 and has been to Holy Cannoli on a number of occasions, said: “It’s a shame to hear that they’re closing, I had no idea. I’ve been there plenty of times and when the suns out, it’s nice to sit outside and have a drink or a cake. As awful as it is, because of the prices of things at the moment, I’m guessing more and more places will close, it’s inevitable.”

Kennedy continued: “I feel that it makes sense for another cafe to open. I’ve only ever known Holy Cannoli to be there, I am sad they’re closing.”

John Chambers, 72 has also been to Holy Cannoli. John who is from Newark said: “It’s been there [the cafe] for a while, I’ve been in to get a coffee before.

“I think that it should be knocked down to put seats there or something like that. That’s a good spot for a seating area.”

Caroline Hart, who is 60 and lives in Mapperley was surprised to hear the cafe was to close. Now retired, Caroline said: “It’s a popular and loved cafe, there’s always people in there. I was very surprised to hear that it was closing and so soon too, I go in there with my husband or when I meet up with a friend.

“I’m worried not just for Mapperley’s high street but high streets all across the country. There are more and more empty shops now.”

Caroline continued: “There’s a lot of cafes, restaurants and charity shops in Mapperley, similar to Sherwood but a cafe like Holi Cannoli starting up again seems perfect and I wish the owners who are leaving the best of luck.”
