An 18-ft crocodile who was considered the largest in the world has died at the age of 120.
Cassius, weighing over a ton, was previously seen as a menace off the coast of Cairns, Queensland, notorious for attacking boats and snatching cattle.
In recent years, however, he became a beloved resident and star attraction at the Marineland Melanesia Crocodile Habitat on Green Island, which paid special tribute to him.
The sanctuary announced on Facebook that he died this weekend after his health began to decline on October 15.
“It is with deep sadness that we share the passing of our beloved mate Cassius,” a statement read.
“He was more than just a Crocodile, he was a cherished member of our family and brought joy and companionship to his best mate George for over 37 years.”
George had only recently relocated to Cairns from Marineland after 52 years living on Green Island to an assisted care residence, the statement added.
“Cassius will be deeply missed, but our love and memories of him will remain in our hearts forever.
“Thank you to everyone who visited Cassius throughout his life and offered kindness along the way.”
Cassius passed a health check on October 14 but started refusing to eat shortly after and was found dead at 11am, local time, on Saturday.
Dozens of comments have now been made in tribute, with many fans sharing their encounters with the big croc.
“I visited you in 2008 with my husband on our honeymoon,” was one of many messages.
The news follows an Australian influencer being forced into an apology after throwing a chicken to a crocodile, something that is illegal for a wild creature.
