World leaders have congratulated Liz Truss on becoming the UK’s Prime Minister after she defeated Rishi Sunak to take over Boris Johnson’s role as leader of the Conservative Party.

European leaders, including Finland’s Sanna Marin and French leader Emmanuel Macron, said they look forward to working closely with Truss, while the European Commission president said that “the EU and the UK are partners.”

Truss’s political rivals, Keir Starmer and Nicola Sturgeon, also offered their congratulations but urged the new Tory leader to address the cost-of-living crisis.

Outgoing prime minister Boris Johnson said: “Congratulations to Liz Truss on her decisive win. I know she has the right plan to tackle the cost-of-living crisis, unite our party, and continue the great work of uniting and levelling up our country.

“Now is the time for all Conservatives to get behind her 100 per cent.”

Labour leader Keir Starmer: “I’d like to congratulate our next Prime Minister Liz Truss as she prepares for office.

“But after 12 years of the Tories all we have to show for it is low wages, high prices, and a Tory cost-of-living crisis. Only Labour can deliver the fresh start our country needs.”

First Minister of Scotland Nicola Sturgeon said: “Congratulations to Liz Truss. Our political differences are deep, but I will seek to build a good working relationship with her as I did with [the] last three PMs.

“She must now freeze energy bills for people and businesses, deliver more cash support, and increase funding for public services.”

French President Emmanuel Macron said: “Congratulations to Liz Truss on her election. The British people are our friends, the British nation is our ally. Let us continue working together to defend our shared interests.”

Finnish Prime Minister Sanna Marin said: “Warm congratulations Liz Truss on your future role as Prime Minister.

“UK is among Finland’s most valued partners. I look forward to working closely with you on security and defence, climate, and so many other areas.”

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said: “Congratulations Liz Truss. The EU and the UK are partners.

“We face many challenges together, from climate change to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. I look forward to a constructive relationship, in full respect of our agreements.”

Prime Minister of Estonia Kaja Kallas said: “My heartfelt congratulations to Liz Truss, new Conservative leader and next British PM.

“Estonia and the UK are already the closest of friends and allies, and I’m confident our partnership will only grow. Looking forward to our cooperation and meeting again soon.”

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said: “Congratulations on becoming Prime Minister, Liz Truss.

“The relationship between Canada and the UK is one of the strongest in the world, and I look forward to making it even stronger as we work to make life better for people on both sides of the Atlantic.”

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi said: “Congratulations Liz Truss for being chosen to be the next PM of the UK.

“Confident that under your leadership, the India-UK Comprehensive Strategic Partnership will be further strengthened. Wish you the very best for your new role and responsibilities.”

Australian Prime Minister Antony Albanese said: “Congratulations to Liz Truss on your election as Conservative Party Leader and endorsement as UK Prime Minister.

“I look forward to a continued constructive relationship and friendship between our nations and people.”

Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida said: “I would like to extend my heartfelt congratulations to Foreign Minister Truss on her appointment as Conservative Leader.

“I have high hopes that Prime Minister Truss will lead the UK under her strong leadership. I am pleased to be able to work closely with you to realize a ‘free and open Indo-Pacific.’ I wish you all the best in your future endeavors.”
