World Cup 2026 live: England and Scotland learn full match schedule after shameful draw ceremony

England and Scotland now know their full match schedules at the 2026 World Cup after yesterday’s long, chaotic and shameful draw ceremony in Washington DC.

England already knew they would meet Croatia in their opening game of the World Cup – and will also play Panama and Ghana in Group L – while Scotland will have a glamour game with Brazil in their opener before also taking on Haiti and 2022 semi-finalist Morocco in Group C.

Now the exact time and venue of every match has been revealed, England know they face trips to Dallas, Boston and New York, with each match kicking off at either 9pm or 10pm UK, while Scotland will be in Boston and Miami but their first game against Haiti is a 2am UK time kick-off, before 11pm starts for their other two games.

Friday’s drawn-out ceremony featured speeches by Fifa president Gianni Infantino, the award of a controversial Peace Prize to US president Donald Trump, a performance by Robbie Williams and a complex and at times chaotic draw helmed by Rio Ferdinand, who seemed determined to land as many bad jokes as possible.

England are among the favourites to lift the trophy in New Jersey on 19 July, as Thomas Tuchel aims to do what Gareth Southgate couldn’t quite manage and claim glory in a major final. But there will be plenty of contenders next summer such as Spain, France, Germany, Brazil and reigning champions Argentina. Scotland, meanwhile, will be aiming to make a big impact at a first World Cup for 28 years.

Follow reaction to the 2026 World Cup draw and the full match schedule reveal below:

Thomas Tuchel responds to 2026 World Cup draw with message to England players

16:57 , Luke Baker

Thomas Tuchel says it’s “most important” for England to go to the World Cup ready to face anyone and not worrying about pathway or potential opponents. The 52-year-old implored his side to seize the occasion “with hunger and with excitement and arrive as a team”.

England were drawn in a group with Croatia, Panama and Ghana for matches expected to primarily take place on the east coast, although the exact details will be confirmed shortly.

Tuchel admitted that some of the surprise was taken out of the draw due to the fact England were placed in the last group, L, leaving limited options by the time it came around.

While he spoke of the challenge of Croatia, however, the manager’s main message was for England to be willing to face anyone or anything.

Ireland boss Heimir Hallgrimsson reacts to ‘strange’ World Cup draw: ‘Football was second’

16:41 , Luke Baker

Ireland’s Heimir Hallgrimsson admitted it felt like “football was second” at a “strange” World Cup draw.

The Irish manager was present at the Kennedy Center in Washington since his team will have a group involving hosts Mexico, South Africa and South Korea if they can get through play-offs involving Czech Republic and then either Denmark or North Macedonia, as he spoke about how needs to ensure they are properly prepared in case they do get through.

While he stated he was “excited” to be involved, he couldn’t hide a certain bafflement at how the draw actually went.

Trump, Infantino and Ferdinand’s bad jokes: Inside Fifa’s shambolic and shameful 2026 World Cup draw

16:03 , Luke Baker

Right at the start of events in Washington’s Kennedy Center, Fifa president Gianni Infantino warned “it’s not a normal draw”.

That was saying something. It featured extremely politicised interpretations of the most grave situations in the world, from Gaza to Kosovo, which started to look a lot like propaganda.

It is a tragedy for football that Fifa – the body that is supposed to serve the game – has resorted to this. Somehow, another draw.

The 2026 World Cup draw ultimately just formed an utterly dismal spectacle.

Alan Shearer reacts to England's World Cup draw

14:02 , Luke Baker

Former England star Alan Shearer has had his say on the draw/

“It’s a decent draw for England, it could have been tougher, it could have been easier,” Shearer said via Betfair.

“The route, if things go as planned… which never happens, is a tough one. It’s a big if, things have to go to plan for England and other teams for the route to the final that people are talking about, but if that is the case then it is a tough draw from the quarterfinals onwards.

“But overall, I think the draw is decent, I wouldn’t go overboard and say it’s a brilliant draw.

“It’s a tough opener against Croatia, having played them so many times, but ultimately, we have to be confident that we can get through, it would be pretty bad if we didn’t get through to the knockouts, but having seen the draw, I’m absolutely confident that England will get through.”

From Gianni Infantino and Donald Trump to Rio Ferdinand’s excruciating jokes, our man in Washington Miguel Delaney endured it all.

Here’s Miguel’s thoughts on a chaotic and shameful World Cup draw

When will the World Cup fixtures be revealed?

13:05 , Luke Baker

A reminder of what we’re expecting later today.

The draw for the World Cup has been made with all nations aware of their group opponents — but all will have to wait to find out exactly where and when they will be in action.

While the venues for games in the groups containing the three host nations — Mexico in Group A, Canada in Group B and the USA in Group D — have already been confirmed, the rest have to wait for both the stadium and kick-off time for each fixture to be confirmed.

Fifa will reveal the full match schedule this afternoon with a live streamed event held from 5pm GMT (midday local time).

Scotland set up for blockbuster Brazil rematch

12:44 , Luke Baker

Scotland do not have an easy group. While their opening match against Haiti will be a huge opportunity for them to bag their first win at a major tournament this century, things then get tricky.

Morocco showed what they could do in Qatar by reaching the semi-finals and Brazil are, well, Brazil. It’s a daunting but undoubtedly tantalising matchup.

Remarkably, it’s an almost identical group to the one they had at their previous World Cup appearance in 1998, with Haiti instead of Norway the only difference.

So there will be rematches against Morocco (Scotland lost 3-0) and Brazil (Scotland lost 2-1). Samba football versus Clarke-ball! Love it.

What is the group of death?

12:23 , Luke Baker

As was expected/enforced by the changes Fifa made to how the draw is conducted, there isn’t too much scope for a ‘group of death’.

But if we were going to pick one, Group I would probably take the crown. So far made up of France, Senegal and Erling Haaland’s Norway, you feel the 2018 champions don’t have it particularly easy.

The fourth nation to join the group will be the winner of Play-Off, one of Iraq, Bolivia and Suriname. Of course, they’ll do anything to get to North America next summer – but you fear they may be the group punching bag.

Who could Northern Ireland face at the World Cup?

11:19 , Luke Baker

Northern Ireland could also still reach the World Cup and now know who they’ll face if they get there.

After finishing third in Group A in European World Cup qualifying, Northern Ireland’s Nations League performance means they have advanced into Path A of the play-offs.

They will first travel to face Italy in Rome on 26 March in a semi-final, hoping to set up a deciding clash with either Wales or Bosnia and Herzegovina — who meet on the same night.

Win that clash and Northern Ireland will take up their place in Group B alongside co-hosts Canada, as well as Qatar and Switzerland.

Wales still harbour ambitions of making it to USA/Canada/Mexico next summer for a second straight World Cup appearance.

After finishing second in Group J in European World Cup qualifying, Wales have advanced into Path A of theplay-offs but face a tough set of matches if they hope to reach the tournament.

Fifa’s bow to Cristiano Ronaldo marks a new low in the stained reign of Gianni Infantino

10:20 , Miguel Delaney, in Washington DC

When you speak to those near the very top of Fifa, pretty much as close to Gianni Infantino’s presidential office as you can get, many still declare themselves baffled by the decision to suspend two matches of Cristiano Ronaldo’s ban.

They weren’t privy to any extra explanation about the process or rationale, beyond the brief statement to which the global body has directed media, as well as references to the fact that this was the 40-year-old’s first international red card.

Fifa duly cited Article 27 of its disciplinary code, which allows its judicial committee the option to “fully or partially suspend” such disciplinary measures. So, an “elbowing” offence that is normally supposed to bring a minimum of a three-match suspension only brings one. It isn’t completely unprecedented – but it is unusual.

That can be felt in the response of the wider game, as many struggle to understand the rationale. Ronaldo may not have been sent off for Portugal, but he has received 12 red cards. It’s far from an uncharacteristic moment that warrants leniency.

Trump makes Pele admission at World Cup 2026 draw

Before the draw, US president Donald Trump opened up on watching the late Brazilian great Pele during his time in the United States.

Pele, who won three World Cup titles and is hailed as one of the greatest players in history, played for the New York Cosmos between 1975 to 1977.

“That man can play,” Trump said about Pele. “I was pretty young at that point.”

‘This is pathetic:’ Fans react as Trump receives first ever FIFA Peace Prize

09:17 , Luke Baker

Football fans reacted with outrage and incredulity as Donald Trump accepted the newly created “FIFA Peace Prize” during the 2026 World Cup draw.

“This is pathetic,” wrote one user, responding to a picture of the president being handed the prize by FIFA President Gianni Infantino at Friday’s ceremony at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C.

“FIFA is so corrupted man, they actually made a ‘peace’ award for Trump because he got upset about not getting the Nobel peace prize... What are we even doing here?” wrote another user, with a third adding: “He will be telling us from now on how this award is actually more important than the Nobel Peace Prize.”

Others described the handing over of the seemingly arbitrary award to Trump as “beyond parody,” though some looked forward to the prospect. “Can't wait for a South Park episode about this,” wrote one user.

England’s World Cup 2026 fixtures: Group opponents, dates and venues after draw confirmed

08:48 , Luke Baker

England will play a familiar foe in Croatia at the 2026 World Cup, as the 48-nation tournament began to take shape in Friday’s draw in Washington DC.

Croatia knocked out England from the 2018 World Cup at the semi-final stage. Now they will meet in the first game of Group L at the 2026 tournament, in a group which also contains Panama and Ghana.

Croatia are among the toughest opponents England could have expected and will be their opening match in Toronto or Dallas on 17 June. England faced Panama at the 2018 finals, beating them 6-1 in the group phase, while they have never faced Ghana before in a competitive match.

Scotland have learned their group stage opponents for the World Cup 2026 as Steve Clarke’s men were given a tough draw.

Scotland sealed their first World Cup since 1998 in dramatic fashion when they scored two stoppage-time stunners to pip Denmark to top spot in their final qualifier, thereby earning automatic qualification for next summer’s tournament finals.

Having been placed in Pot 3, they will face a daunting test against Brazil from Pot 1 and Morocco, semi-finalists at the last World Cup, from Pot 2. They will also face Haiti from Pot 4, who are returning to a World Cup for the first time since 1976.

Scotland’s first World Cup outing in 28 years will be against that side, with the venue for the clash to be confirmed today.
