With the group stage games behind us, the World Cup has moved into the knockouts where a series of one-off matches will decide who progresses and who leaves the tournament. While the groups are decided over three matches as to who progresses, knockout games have to be decided on the night.
While that is the case for wins and losses over the standard time, draws throw a different scenario over the mix with the need for a tiebreaker. The current FIFA rules state that World Cup games got to 30 minutes of extra-time, split into two 15 minutes halves to decide the winner.
Should the game remain a draw by the time it hits the 120th minute, then a penalty shootout will be the next deciding factor for the match. The first five penalties for each side will determine the winner, but if that is also level, then it goes down to sudden death, where one side taking the lead over a penalty each will be given the win.
