Overtime can look awfully tempting when the paycheck needs a little boost. An extra hour at work can mean extra money, but the amount added to a bank account does not always tell the whole story. Taxes, commuting costs, meals, childcare, parking, and even the time spent getting ready for work can nibble away at that seemingly juicy number. Before agreeing to every extra shift, calculate what that hour is actually worth.
That does not mean overtime represents a bad deal. Sometimes an extra shift makes perfect sense, especially when a specific financial goal sits on the other side of the paycheck. The useful part comes from knowing what the additional work really produces instead of letting a bigger gross paycheck make the decision automatically.
