Work on vehicular underpass on Trichy-Madurai national highway begins

TRICHY: The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has commenced construction work on a new vehicular underpass (VUP) for the Trichy-Madurai national highway near Kodumbalur on Friday.

At `15.04 crore, a flyover with an underpass for vehicles to cross the highway would eliminate a road accident blackspot in the stretch that interlinks Manapparai and Pudukottai towns.

As part of the proposal, 670m-long and 7m-wide service roads would come up on either side of the underpass for vehicles heading to villages to bypass the highway without disturbing the vehicular movement. The underpass portion shall be 12m-long and 5.5m-high, enabling vehicles to cross the NH safely using the services roads.

“We received a representation from elected representatives mentioning the road accidents recurring in the stretch. After a feasibility study, NHAI allocated funds for a underpass to eliminate the accident vulnerabilities in the road junction at Kodumbalur,” P Narasimhan, project director, NHAI Trichy project implementation unit (PIU) said.

Karur MP S Jothimani inspected civil work in the underpass. The project is expected to be completed within 12 months.
