Woolwich shooting: Teen chased 14-year-old into stairwell; shot at close range

A court session in London uncovered details surrounding the death of Eghase Ogbebor, who was fourteen years old. During an incident on 2 April, a pursuit occurred through a staircase area in Woolwich. Prosecutors state the 16-year-old fired one shot. The bullet hit Ogbebor in the chest at close range. Medical personnel began care on site without delay. Even so, the young individual passed away soon after.

Proceedings at the Old Bailey revealed key details of the incident. Near the upper landing, prosecutor William Emlyn Jones KC said the moment turned decisive when the accused lifted a gun and fired toward Ogbebor. Death followed swiftly after the injury, according to his account. Though armed himself, Ogbebor’s possession of a weapon remains under investigation by investigators.

From HMP Feltham, the accused joined by video connection. Held in custody until another hearing in July. A trial anticipated to span six weeks is scheduled for January. Because of his age, legal rules shield the individual's identity.

Just days after the shots were fired, authorities arrested one suspect who faced formal charges by April 9. The next day brought another arrest—a second teen of the same age held over murder claims; however, detectives released him on bail after a deeper investigation.

A fresh round of police activity in Woolwich brought three more people into custody. A 16-year-old teenager, a 19-year-old man, and another man aged 46 were taken in over suspected roles in the event. Each walked out on bail as investigators pressed forward. Before that, on April 3, two younger individuals, aged 14 and 16, and an 18-year-old male had already been held. These earlier cases also remained open, their release tied to further checks.

Teenage weapon possession came into focus in London areas following this event. Police stressed the seriousness of the situation, along with a careful review of every piece of evidence. What happened unfolds through testimony, forensic findings, and investigative reports.

Further details may emerge at the July hearing when counsel addresses procedural issues before the trial. What happens in January will shape much of the case, as evidence is reviewed thoroughly. Witness accounts will be shared then, along with evaluations formed independently by each party. The timeline remains fixed, though clarity could shift as arguments unfold.
