British boxing star Leigh Wood was tonight stopped in the seventh as Mauricio Lara claimed the WBA featherweight world title in Nottingham. The home favourite came into the fight not as the favourite but looked to be defying then odds with a heavy-hitting opening six rounds.
But one left hook saw Lara prove why he was so fancied, having last year beaten Josh Warrington and now has a first title to his name.
There was plenty of eye-catching action on the undercard as Dalton Smith defended his British super-lightweight belt against Billy Allington after Gary Cully beat Wilfredo Flores to win the WBA intercontinental lightweight title. Olympian Cheavon Clarke made it five wins from five as a professional with an impressive points win over stand-in Israel Duffus.
