More women than ever before have been involved in producing Sydney's famous New Year's Eve spectacular as organisers gear up to wave goodbye to 2024.

Dubbed "Sydney's night of nights", 20 minutes of fireworks over the harbour will celebrate inclusivity and harmony while delivering an explosive atmosphere.

City of Sydney Mayor Clover Moore said women aged six to 79 would be the stars of the show, making up its singers, composers, producers, technicians and directors.

Both batches of fireworks - at 9pm and midnight - will celebrate Barangaroo, a prominent Cammeraygal woman during the early period of colonisation.

Projections on the Sydney Harbour Bridge will carry her image and illustrate female Indigenous warriors' connection to the waters.

Midnight's main event - a 12-minute firework spectacular - will feature 23,000 individual pyrotechnic shots, 13,000 aerial shells and 40,000 ground-based shooting effects from 264 firing locations across the bridge.

Ms Moore said Sydney would show the world how New Year's Eve was done.

"We're virtually the first city to bring in the new year, so everyone will be watching," she said.

"Given 2024 has been such a tough year for so many people, this New Year's Eve is going to be such an amazing gift for everyone to come together … it will also be saying we want 2025 to be much better."

The event's chosen charity is the National Breast Cancer Foundation, which is aiming to raise awareness of its vision of zero deaths caused by the disease.

At 10pm, the bridge, foreshore and boats on the harbour will turn pink while projections are displayed on the pylons.
