A woman who started a fire at the Byker Wall estate sat watching calmly as the blaze took hold and told a neighbour she hoped everyone would die, a court heard.
Aly Wainwright started a fire at a property in Dalton Crescent on April 20 last year, which was described by witnesses as an "inferno". The 33-year-old pleaded guilty to arson on the day of her trial at Durham Crown Court on September 29, last year, and appeared back at the court for sentence on Tuesday.
Wainwright appeared back at the court via link from HMP Low Newton after her sentencing was adjourned last month so that a psychiatric report could be put together. Vincent Ward, prosecuting, said Wainwright had been renting her Byker Wall flat from Karbon Homes when the incident occurred.
