A woman who has reached the grand old age of 109 still has a bacon sandwich for breakfast every day. And, of course, it has to be accompanied by a cup of tea.
Winifred Parker recently celebrated her birthday surrounded by five generations of her family at a care home in Woodstock, Oxfordshire. Winnie is the oldest resident at Orders of St John Care Trust (OSJCT), a charity which runs 60 care homes across the UK.
The party featured a saxophonist playing her favourite song, I'm Forever Blowing Bubbles, alongside balloons and cake. Winnie was a singer on the Birmingham club scene in her youth and was known for her brilliant singing.
She has an impressive 10 great-great grandchildren – the oldest of whom is 18 – and another on the way in March. Great-granddaughter Kelly White said: "It’s priceless for the youngest children to have a great-great-grandparent – we all have so many wonderful memories of growing up with Winnie.”
Sally Connolly, activities coordinator at OSJCT homes, said: "She just takes it in her stride, she puts her pearls on every day and gets dressed up. Winnie just loves life. She lies in till about 9.30am and then has a bacon sandwich every morning with a cup of tea.”
