Woman who gave birth to enormous 11lbs baby says shocked doctors 'gasped' when he was born

A mum has revealed how shocked and unprepared she was for her baby's enormous 'toddler' like size when he was born. Doctors and midwives had estimated that Ruby Eden's little one would be around 9lb but he came out weighing a staggering 11lbs 13oz.

The 24-year-old parent had two scans when she was 34 weeks pregnant and the midwife informed her that her son looked 'slightly on the bigger side' but was 'estimated at a normal weight throughout the whole pregnancy'. This did not come as a concern to Ruby and her husband as their daughter was around the 9lb mark when she was born, Wales Online reports.

However, when Teddie was born on August 1 2022, eight days after his due date, the mum said that 'every single person in the theatre gasped' when they saw how unexpectedly 'huge' he was. When the youngster was born, he was diagnosed with a condition called polyhydramnios which according to the NHS, happens when there is too much amniotic fluid around the baby during pregnancy.

Ruby, from Warrington, explained: "He had a lot of issues with his kidneys and his bowels that created a bit of worry', so he had to come out shortly after her final scan. He was born the next day [after the 41 week scan] via C-section, which was sort of half emergency, half elective.

"It wasn't anything to do with his weight, even though everyone seems to think so. Not one person could have warned me about how big he was.

"After they pulled him out of the section every single person in the theatre gasped. The midwife just looked at me and said 'he is a giant' and I thought 'oh that's great', and then she was like 'no, he's huge' and I was like 'oh, ok'."

"They weighed Teddie straight away in the theatre and "every single person was shocked. I've always said he was a toddler when he was born.

"He was giant. When I saw him I wasn't sure, but then I held him and I was like 'yeah he is.'."

After his birth, little Teddie had some issues maintaining his weight due to his liver problems. Ruby explained: "His liver couldn't turn the calories he was getting from breastfeeding into glucose so he ended up losing quite a bit of weight and ended up being quite ill and constantly in hospital."

Teddy is now a happy and healthy baby at six months old. Since his birth, Ruby has shared her story on TikTok where it has attracted over 1.5 million views.
