Four people have been fined more than £5,000 in total after dumping rubbish on the streets of Bolton.
Bolton Council said it was ‘continuing a war’ on flytippers in the borough and would not hesitate to use enforcement powers if culprits could be identified. The fines, totalling £5,000, were handed to four people convicted of flytipping and other waste offences in Bolton.
Angela Guffogg, of Ainsworth Lane, pleaded guilty to flytipping a sofa directly outside a recycling facility. She was fined £233 and ordered to pay £100 costs and a victim surcharge of £93.
Keenan Dauneey of Hamilton Street, Astley Bridge, was found guilty dumping a double mattress, flooring and several black bags at the side of his house. In his absence, magistrates imposed a fine of £880, and ordered to pay £962 costs and a victim surcharge of £352.
Marek Rafael of Alston Street dumped waste including a mattress. He was fined £880 and ordered to pay £485 costs and a victim surcharge of £352.
Each of these defendants was initially issued with a fixed penalty notice, but after failing to pay their cases were heard at Bolton Magistrates Court last week, (November 28).
Also in court was Karen Moran of Mango Place, Salford, who pleaded guilty to using an unlicensed carrier to remove her waste which was subsequently dumped in Moses Gate. She was fined £120, ordered to pay £300 costs and a victim surcharge of £34.
Coun Hilary Fairclough, deputy leader of Bolton Council said: “These recent cases serve as a reminder that flytipping will not be tolerated in Bolton.
“If you dump waste illegally you may find yourself in court with a substantial financial penalty. If you pay someone to dispose of your waste, it is vital that you check they are a registered waste carrier to ensure the waste is disposed of in the correct manner.”
Residents can find a registered waste carrier in their area on the Environment Agency’s website. In 2022 Bolton Council has issued 82 fixed penalty notices and taken 26 individuals to court for flytipping offences.
