Woman who died after car plunged into river pictured as two kids escape sinking vehicle

A woman has been named after her car plunged into a river with two children inside.

The woman died in the tragedy on Friday night while the two boys, aged ten and 12, managed to escape as the vehicle sank deeper into the water.

Horrified bystanders pulled the boys to safety after the car reversed into the River Lee at Kennedy Quay in Cork, Ireland.

She was named locally as Gillian Daly from Marlborough in the greater Douglas area of the city, reports the Irish Mirror.

The children were rushed to hospital and treated for shock before being released into the care of relatives.

Gardai are treating the incident as a tragic accident and hope to speak with the children to piece together what happened in the moments beforehand.

A spokesperson said: “Gardai are investigating all the circumstances of an incident where a vehicle entered the River Lee.

"Two children were recovered from the water and were taken to Cork University Hospital to receive treatment for non-life threatening injuries."

Gardai are appealing for witnesses to get in touch, especially those with dash-cam footage.

Tributes have been paid online, with one social media user saying: "May you Rest in Peace beautiful Gillian."

Another said: "So so sorry to hear of Gillian’s passing … she taught my children in primary school and was so nice and kind may she rest in peace."

One social media user added: "Biggest hugs to all Gillian's family. May she rest in peace."

On the night of the tragedy, a search continued into the night for Gillian who was said to be trapped in the car when it entered Kennedy Quay at around 8.45pm.

Cork Missing Persons Search and Rescue, which was involved in the operation.

A spokesperson posted: “We would like to pass on our deepest condolences to the family and friends of the deceased.”

Results of the post mortem examination will help to determine the course of the Garda investigation into the incident.
