Woman using a wheelchair dies after entering the water off Dun Laoghaire pier

A woman using a wheelchair has died after she was pulled from the sea in Dublin earlier today.

The woman, who was aged in her 50s, entered the water at the East pier in Dun Laoghaire on Monday afternoon, a popular walking spot with locals.

Gardai and the Irish Coast Guard rushed to the scene and her body and wheelchair were later recovered from the water at 2.30pm.

Gardai confirmed that the woman has been pronounced dead and a post-mortem is due to take place in the coming days.

Officers are currently investigating all circumstances that lead to her death.

A statement from gardai said: "Gardaí are investigating all the circumstances after the body of a female in her 50s was recovered from the Water at Dun Laoghaire at 2:30pm this afternoon, Monday 27th June.

"Her body has since been removed to the mortuary at Loughlinstown where a post-mortem will take place at a later date.
