In this day and age, it's rare to get a swoon-worthy love letter from your beloved, and many would be thrilled to receive such an old-fashioned declaration of affection.
One young woman was therefore quite excited to learn her boyfriend had penned her what appeared at first glance to be a lengthy love letter, filled with what she naturally assumed would be heartfelt compliments and vows of devotion.
Sadly, as loved-up letter recipient Kayla Velarde eagerly pored over the words, it quickly dawned on her she was in fact reading a detailed seven-page break-up note.
To make matters worse, it later emerged her other half had tried to match with one of her pals on the dating app Raya. Not exactly Jane Austen territory.

Heartbroken, Kayla shared footage of the typed-out letter to TikTok, writing, "me being excited thinking my boyfriend wrote me a love letter... but he said surprise it's a break-up letter."
The video appears to have been taken before Kayla realised what he'd written and sees her gushing over the length of the note, which she described as a "whole book of a love letter."
Kayla, who goes by the TikTok username @karlavelarde1234, said she was "so excited he had finally put in the work", with the reveal being a complete "let down."
She continued: "He told me a surprise was awaiting me home …but no it was a breakup letter and a magic trick-looking suitcase with all my sh** in it."
According to Kayla, the split came as a complete shock, and there had been no arguments beforehand to suggest what was to come. He even mentioned how "kind" she was in the surprise note.
A number of Kayla's followers have been left dismayed on her behalf, offering her some much-needed words of comfort. Meanwhile, others have been reminded of the long letter Rachel wrote to Ross in one of the most famous Friends episodes.
One person wrote: "If this happened to me I would grade it and return it - while sobbing."
Another said: "Damn I think I would prefer this. That way whenever I have questions about the breakup I can refer back to the textbook for answers and not call him."
In a follow-up video, Kayla revealed her no ex had signed off the letter in the "same way he signs off his work emails", writing "with gratitude."
He also added a "PS" request, continuing: "All I ask for is respect from here on out, as I will respect you through this difficult transition. I hope nothing is hostile or blameful.
"I simply ask you to not hook up or date my friends I hang out with. Or start creating the type of Fedora hats I'll be getting into. And I will never put your name down or make you look bad."
Unfortunately, when it comes to the dating friends rule it seems he wasn't seeing this as a two-way street. Soon after her original vid, Kayla revealed her friend had alerted her about him trying to match with her on Raya, using the photo she'd snapped of him mere days before.
