Woman shares unusual 'best hack ever' to stop slipping on icy footpaths using old socks

With temperatures plummeting in recent weeks and snow falling across many areas of the UK, slipping on the icy footpaths is a real risk for many this December.

One woman has shared what is certainly one of the more unconventional tips out there to avoid falling over in the wintry conditions - but the Scottish mum has said that she swears by the unusual method and even branded it the "best hack ever." TikTok user @mels_family_life went viral on the social media platform after sharing what she does to increase her grip on the ice, and it won't cost a penny to try as long as you have a pair of old socks lying around.

In a video that has racked up more than a million views, the savvy Scot shows that all she does it put a pair of large socks over her shoes to stop her from slipping when she's out and about in icy weather. The TikTok user branded the odd hack an "absolute game changer" - and plenty of viewers vowed to try it out for themselves.

"Off to Primark for men's trainer socks it is then because it's a skating rink out there," one person commented on the clip.

Someone else added: "I'm so on this, I live in Scotland and am petrified of slipping, I've had a few falls too, so thanks."

"Going to do this!" a third vowed. "I recently slipped and broke my elbow so I have the absolute fear of falling again. This will help so much."

Others who had tried the tip out before hailed its success. "My grandma told me to do this years ago! Works a treat," one person wrote.

"I've always done this," another commenter shared. "Always get the looks but I ain't the one sliding."

While some sceptics pointed out that they might attract some stares going out with socks over their shoes, one TikTok user pointed out: "I'd rather look silly with socks over shoes than struggling around on crutches after snapping a leg slipping on ice."
