A WOMAN was sexually assaulted on a popular Fife walking route in a daylight attack, police have said.

Officers are appealing for information after the woman was assaulted on the Fife Coastal Path near Kingsbarns on Wednesday.

Police said at around 1pm, the woman was approached by a man and assaulted close to the beach, before the man ran towards St Andrews.

According to the woman, the suspect spoke with an Italian accent and is described as around 5ft 9ins with short dark-coloured hair and stubble.

He is said to be wearing an orange running vest, shorts and had a tattoo on the back of his right calf.

Inspector Helen Manuel said: “As our enquiries continue we would appeal to anyone who has any information that may assist our investigation, or who recognises the description of the suspect to please contact us.

“We do not believe that this is linked to the indecent exposure incident in St Andrews on Tuesday, 21 July, however, we are keeping an open mind as our investigation continues. We are aware that local people will be concerned by these incidents and would like to assure them that there are additional patrols in the area to offer reassurance and anyone with information or concerns should speak to officers. ”

Those with any information are advised to contact 101, quoting incident number 1520 of July 22.
