A woman has been taken to hospital in a "serious condition" after falling from the High Level Bridge near the Quayside in Newcastle.
Emergency services were called shortly before 9.10am on Wednesday after receiving a report that a woman had fallen from the High Level Bridge into the water below. Northumbria Police, the North East Ambulance Service, and Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service all attended the scene.
The woman was rescued from the water and was transported to Newcastle's Royal Victoria Infirmary where police said she remains in a "serious condition". Following the incident, the Quayside was closed for a short period of time from King Street to Cox Chare before it reopened shortly before 10am.
A Northumbria Police spokesperson said: "Shortly before 9.10am today (Wednesday) we received a report that a woman had fallen from the High Level Bridge near Newcastle’s Quayside into the water below.
"Emergency services attended and rescued the woman from the water. She was transported to the RVI by ambulance where she remains in a serious condition."
A Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson, said: "We can confirm that crews from Byker and Newcastle Central Community Fire Stations were requested to attend a police incident on Newcastle Quayside earlier this morning.
"The emergency call came in to our fire control team at 9.09am and then three appliances and the TWFRS fire boat were deployed to the scene within five minutes of the initial call being received.
"Upon arrival, our fire boat assisted in rescuing a woman from the River Tyne. She was left in the care of the North East Ambulance Service. We left the location at 9.51am."
A North East Ambulance Service spokesperson said: "We received a call at 9.10am this morning to reports of an incident at the High Level Bridge in Newcastle. We dispatched two ambulance crews, two specialist paramedics, and two crews from our Hazardous Area Response Team (HART). We received additional support from our colleagues at Northumbria Police, the Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service, and HM Coastguard. One patient was taken to the Royal Victoria Infirmary (RVI) for further treatment."
