A woman needed emergency surgery after she was bitten by a dog in south Liverpool on the local election trail.
While out door knocking last week on St Mary’s Road, Garston, Sharon Connor did what every candidate would do, and posted a party leaflet through the letterbox to a potential voter. What she didn’t expect was to be met with the teeth of a pet behind the door.
Miss Connor, who is standing for Labour in the new Garston ward, said she almost lost the tip of her finger and had to be whisked to hospital to have the damage operated on. She said: “I had my guard down and had put my hand through as I was posting a leaflet.

“It was all so quick, there was no warning there was a dog in the house, it probably heard me down the street when I’d been next door. I didn’t actually realise what had happened at first, it wasn’t until I pulled my hand out and there was blood everywhere.”
Miss Connor, who had been out campaigning with fellow Labour members, is hoping to retain her place at Liverpool Town Hall in the newly drawn Garston ward which will elect two members on Friday. Taking to social media, she said usually she was careful when posting leaflets but had been “caught out” this time.
After being bitten, she said she went to the nearby New Wellington Pub for help “where they looked after me brilliantly” and onto the walk-in centre in Garston before being transferred for surgery at Whiston Hospital for plastic surgery. Her hand is now bandaged as she begins her recovery.
She said: “When I went to A&E, I went straight in for them to operate on my finger. It could have been a lot worse, I’m glad it happened to me rather than one of the volunteers.
“As councillors, we do this all the time, it’s one of those things you face really. I wouldn’t want it to happen to one of the volunteers.” Miss Connor tweeted how she was thankful to NHS staff and “on the mend” after successful surgery on her hand and was even back delivering leaflets the very same day, albeit “a little bit cautiously.”
