Not every present you receive at Christmas will be to your taste. Sometimes someone won't know you as much as you thought they did and will completely miss the mark with your gift, but that's okay - you can always re-gift it next year! But there is a difference between a present that just doesn't feel like 'you', and a present that is genuinely insulting.
One woman took to Mumsnet to start a thread of 'naff presents' to make herself feel better about what she'd received from her family. She explained that she wasn't just 'fussy', she genuinely couldn't use certain products, but her family were insistent on still buying them for her - despite her health issues.
She wrote: "Another year, another round of presents from my family that I cannot use. I have a serious food allergy and another health condition that means that I can't eat or use some foods/cosmetics.
"These are not new health issues, had them since childhood, yet there is not a single gift out of the few that I received that I can make use of. I decided to be blunt this year (after years of unsuitable gifts) and tell the givers that I can't use their gifts due allergy etc but thanks anyway.
"Now I'm an ungracious brat. Am I? "It's not their fault I'm fussy." I'm really not, I just don't want to get sick. I would prefer not to do the gift thing as I'm not overly bothered about that part of Christmas, but I would be ruining it for everyone else, everyone else who gets decent thoughtful presents based on knowing what they like, it's s*** when those thoughts are not reciprocated.
"Anyone else want to join the naff presents club?"
People who were fuming about their Christmas presents headed to the comments to complain about what they'd received from people - and some of the responses are seriously shocking.
One wrote: "Second-hand trainers, s***** trainers and Rylan's autobiography, I’m sure he’s lovely (Rylan) but not my cuppa."
Another found their present hilarious, writing: "I got a pack of paper napkins from my sister-in-law. She also gave me a pack for my birthday last month - lucky me I guess", followed by a crying with laughter emoji.
Someone else said they knew exactly how the original poster felt, commenting: "I know how you feel.
"I got given a fancy spice set for cooking with. I don't eat spice because of a bowel disorder. They know I can't eat spice. They’ve known me all my life, I’ve had a bowel disorder since I was 10. Apparently, I'm just 'ungrateful' and 'fussy'."
One Mumsnetter said they thought many people were 'mindless' when it came to giving gifts. They said: "Unfortunately, Christmas has turned into a mindless, thoughtless, gift-giving exercise for some.
"I have told everyone not to give me anything this year, as I'm sick of soap/hand cream/general generic rubbish. I don’t blame you for voicing your thoughts."
