Woman's easy trick to dry clothes in two hours without tumble dryer

With energy prices at an all-time high, many of us are trying to avoid using appliances that tend to use a lot of gas or electricity.

The Energy Trust said tumble dryers, along with washing machines and dishwashers, account for a huge 14% of households' energy usage. Some dryers can use as much as £2 a cycle, which soon adds up.

On warm, sunny days, clothes can be hung outside to dry naturally, but at this time of year this is almost impossible.

Thankfully, one woman has shared her hack to dry clothes in two hours, without turning the drier on. Alix Byrne, who lives with her partner in a one-bedroomed apartment, shared her "eureka moment" with the Mirror.

As she covered the clothes horse with the bedsheet, placing it near the radiator, she found that the sheet had created a pocket of hot air. This dried the clothes underneath within just two hours.

Alix, a postwoman, said: "I was trying to find where else to hang the bed sheet to dry, apart from over the kitchen door which ends up smelling of whatever you’re cooking. I usually keep my clothes frame by the radiator, especially in winter and I just thought 'why not throw the bedsheet over the frame, tuck the ends behind the radiator and under the stands then the hot air from the radiator will dry my clothes in hours'.

"I stay in a small, cosy, one bed flat with my partner and we always have two clothes frames at once as we have busy lifestyles and go through a lot of washings which takes up too much space. We have a tumble dryer but to be honest, it costs far too much and doesn’t really leave your clothes smelling the best.

"It saves up space as your clothes would be dry within hours and the clothes horse can be packed away again and into the cupboard. Instead of the usual 24 hours and your clothes are still damp, then low and behold, it’s time for another wash!"
