Woman rushed to hospital after being hit by car on major Manchester road

Emergency services were scrambled to Ashton-under-Lyne on Tuesday evening after a woman was hit by a car. The pedestrian was struck on the westbound carriageway of Wellington Road and rushed to hospital.

Greater Manchester Police initially got the call at around 9.30pm on Tuesday (August 30). The road was blocked off as paramedics attended the scene.

The nature of the woman's injuries have not yet been confirmed however she was taken to Manchester Royal Infirmary. The Serious Collisions Unit are at the scene conducting investigations after the crash, which is thought to be serious.

Transport for Greater Manchester announced the road closure shortly before 10.30pm, with bus routes also being diverted. The main road was blocked off between Oldham Road and Cavendish Street towards Lord Sheldon Way.

A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Police: "At around 9:30pm on Tuesday 30 August 2022, we were called to a report of a road traffic collision involving a car and a pedestrian on Wellington Road, Ashton-under-Lyne.

"NWAS also responded to assist at the scene with the incident currently still ongoing. The extent of the injuries sustained are not fully known at this time."
