Woman rushed to Edinburgh hospital after multi-vehicle smash on busy carriageway

A woman has been rushed to hospital after a multi-vehicle collision on a busy East Lothian road on Sunday morning.

Emergency services rushed to the incident on the A1 near Macmerry around 7am on Sunday, December 11, following reports of a two-vehicle smash.

Officers say a woman was rushed to the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh for treatment, although no further details on the woman's age or condition have been released at this time.

Traffic Scotland alerted motorists in the area of the accident shortly before 8am as both lanes heading southbound were closed.

They said: "NEW: 07:42 A1 (S) CLOSED at Bankton Due to an RTC near Macmerry. Use an alternative route and expect delays."

Motorists across Edinburgh and the Lothians were warned of potential icy conditions as a yellow weather warning was issued by the Met Office for most of eastern Scotland from Saturday morning until Sunday afternoon, December 11.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “We were called around 7am on Sunday, 11 December, to a report of a two car crash on the A1 near Macmerry.

“One woman was taken to the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh by the Scottish Ambulance Service for treatment.

“The road was closed southbound for recovery and re-opened around 8.45am.”
