Woman left needing operation to hand after vicious slashing attack at Lanarkshire flat

A violent thug left an innocent woman needing 70 stitches after an apparent row about his mother.

Ryan Young turned on his victim, slashing her on the head, face and hands during a frenzied attack on April 2 last year.

The ordeal only ended when the terrified victim managed to get hold of a pair of scissors to fend him off.

It emerged Young had previously been jailed for attempted murder in 2009 and also has several other assault convictions.

Now the 28-year-old thug faces another lengthy spell behind bars after he pled guilty to assaulting the woman to her severe injury and permanent disfigurement.

Young was only on the streets for this latest incident after appeal sheriffs allowed him bail for a further accusation of violence.

Sentencing was deferred at the High Court in Glasgow for reports until next month.

The pair had been at a flat in Bellshill with others on the night of the attack.

Prosecutor Mark Mohammed said there was later an argument about an earlier “incident” concerning Young’s mum.

Young, for whatever reason, believed his victim’s brothers had been involved.

The armed thug then followed the woman as she went into the kitchen.

Mr Mohammed: “He began assaulting her with the knife by slashing her on the head and face.

“She also sustained defensive injuries. She then grabbed scissors with which to defend herself.”

A topless Young fled the flat leaving his victim injured and bleeding.

The court heard the victim needed a significant amount of stitches, with one wound alone needing 40 stitches, as well as surgery on her right hand to repair nerve damage.

Young was later traced at a property in Coatbridge.

Rhona Anderson, defending, said: “It is clear this was an atrocious assault and this is acknowledged by him.”

Lord Richardson deferred sentencing until March 21 in Edinburgh.

He told Young: “You have pled guilty to a violent and vicious attack in what must have been a terrifying assault for the victim.

“You have previous convictions for violence and this is further aggravated that you were on bail at the time.”

Young was remanded in custody.
