Woman knocked over by horse running out of control at Welsh town parade

A handler needed hospital treatment after losing control of a horse during a town parade. Hundreds of people descended on Cardigan for the annual Barley Saturday event.

Held on the last Saturday in April has since the 19th century, crowds gather to watch horses parade though the town and this year there were a record number of entries. The horses are followed by of vintage cars, motorbikes, tractors, carriages, milk floats and gypsy wagons.

But one horse got loose and a handler was injured on Saturday April 29. Spectators said that a grey horse broke free from his handler and went "thundering" up the town’s High Street.

The parade was temporarily halted. Organisers said the handler received immediate attention from one of the ambulance teams at the scene and was taken to Withybush Hospital for tests, and was later released.

The secretary of the event has been in touch with the family to check and they believe the "injuries are a minimum".
