A woman has explained how she immediately slashed £300 off her car insurance by buying a simple £10 gadget in Robert Dyas. The purse-friendly gadget can also be found on a budget in stores like Argos and B&Q.
Posting in the Extreme Couponing and Bargains UK group, Louise Waterton said: "I bought a dash cam for £10 in the clearance at Robert Dyas and my car insurance renewal has come down by £300!"
We checked the Robert Dyas website and unfortunately the £10 dash cams are now out of stock. Robert Dyas is, however, stocking the Motorola Full HD Dash Cam for £19.99 (it has been reduced from £69.99, saving you £50).

Alternatively, we found a slightly more expensive model on the Argos website which could help knock hundreds off your car insurance. The Binatone FHD200 Full HD Quick Release Dash Cam costs £39.99, and has hundreds of five-star reviews.
One five-star reviewer wrote: "I bought this dash cam a month ago as my old one wasn't working any longer. I was really impressed with the quality and lightweight feel of this dash cam. My old one used to fall off the windscreen all the time, but this one has held up so far! Great value for a great price!"
Another said: "Purchased this due to so many idiots on the road, gives you piece of mind. Very easy and quick to set up and small enough not to cause a distraction whilst on your windscreen. Magnetic connection means it can lift off/click on in seconds."
A third reviewer wrote: "Tha dashcam is small enough, so it doesn't affect the view and the screen shows you that it works ( I had more expensive dashcam that keept freezing) So far no issues. ( I am using it since July 22) Down side, works only on windshields, no accessories for dashboard."
On Facebook, people warned of the importance of keeping your dash cam on at all times to make sure your insurance remains valid. Grace Elizabeth O'Neill warned: "Make sure you always have it on in the car as it can invalidate your insurance if you say you have one & aren’t using it." Càrl Blàkemôre concurred: "Just ensure its switched on and working at all times, as your dashcam now constitutes a term of your insurance being valid. If you have an accident and it's not working they may invalidate your insurance."
Zoe Bolderson said: "What a saving. Make sure you change the time when clock change otherwise the footage is invalid if time wrong and courts throw the footage out."
Matthew Humphrys said: "The biggest drop in insurance cost for me was passing the advanced driving test, which you can be taught for free as it's done by volunteers. It halved my insurance and made me a much better driver."
The MoneySupermarket website says: "It is increasingly common for insurers to accept dash cam footage to help provide evidence of what happened in an incident. Indeed, it is way better than relying on word of mouth from those involved." You can ask your insurance provider for further information on the benefits of installing a dash cam in your car as the benefits may vary depending on who you are with.
