A woman in her 40s has died after being struck by a car in Leeds city centre on Saturday night.
A 19-year-old man was arrested after the collision on one of the city’s liveliest nightlife streets.
West Yorkshire police said they were called to Merrion Street shortly before 10.30pm to reports that a woman had been hit by a silver Volkswagen Golf.
The woman, who was a pedestrian, was treated at the scene but taken to hospital where she later died, the force said. She is yet to be formally identified. Her family were being supported by police.
The teenage suspect remained in police custody and was being questioned on Sunday.
Officers from the force’s major collision inquiry team said they wanted to speak to anyone who witnessed the incident or the events leading up to it.
The area would have been busy with people at the time of the crash as Merrion Street is a popular nightlife spot.
Footage posted on social media showed a large section of the street cordoned off as emergency services responded to the incident and people looked on.
Police said the collision took place on the junction between Merrion Street and Wade Lane. Motorists who were in the area who have dashcam footage have been asked to check if they captured anything that would help in the police investigation.
