In a viral video with over 44,000 views, user GISELLE (@giiiiselle__) made a case for only wearing dupes instead of forking out way more cash for designer goods.
“These MIU MIU glasses, as much as I wanted them, are quite literally the biggest piece of [expletive] I’ve ever bought in my entire life,” the woman began in the clip.
The woman went on to explain that she wanted the pair of sunglasses, but was just fine purchasing a “dupe.”
However, one of her friends decided to spend $800 so she could have the actual designer brand and not a knockoff.
That didn’t stop the glasses from breaking after a few wears.
Are designer products declining in quality?
This influencer is not the first to point out a decline in the quality of designer products.
Model and influencer Wisdom Kaye also took to TikTok last year to lambast Miu Miu. In a video with 6.7 million views, Kaye called himself a “big Miu Miu fan” and said that he went on an $18,000 shopping spree there.
When he got home, he says all of his things literally fell apart.
“As soon as I get home, everything broke,” he said, while holding up some of the items he purchased for viewers to see.
For example, he gave viewers a close-up of a vest he said he purchased from the designer. One of the buttons on it had already fallen off.
To make matters even worse, the company offered to send Kaye replacements for the items, which he accepted.
He decided to do a “quality test” on the clothes in real time for his viewers.
Then, a button on the new vest came off as well.
“There’s no way bro,” he exclaimed.
According to a CNN article, some experts believe these are not isolated incidents. Some believe high prices do not necessarily reflect increased quality.
In fact, some experts argue that as prices have increased over the years, quality has declined.
How are designer products declining in quality?
Some attribute this change in quality to a change in the way products are assembled.
Many luxury brands began outsourcing production to a “network of subcontractors.” These subcontractors sometimes use undocumented labor in “sweatshop-like” environments.
Ultimately, this increases the profit margins for companies, but hurts the consumer who receives products that are of lesser quality.
At the same time, social media has made consumers more aware of these alleged quality issues. Videos showing broken zippers, loose stitching, peeling leather, and damaged hardware often go viral online, sparking debates about whether luxury fashion is still worth the cost.
Some longtime shoppers argue that many brands are now relying more heavily on their reputation and exclusivity than on craftsmanship itself.
Others say companies are prioritizing rapid production and trend cycles over durability, causing luxury goods to feel more disposable than timeless.
