When picking out a baby name, it is important for parents to come to an agreement that makes both of them happy. If the couple's loved ones like the name too, then there is an added bonus. But if the opposite happens, and the couple's families hate the chosen moniker, they can find themselves in a tricky position.
One mum who knows this only too well has been left in a conundrum after her father insisted his grandchild be named after him. Fixed upon the decision, he keeps trying to dissuade his daughter from picking the baby name that she loves.
But in an added twist, the mum-to-be is expecting a girl - something many said makes the demand even more unreasonable after the mum took to Reddit to share her frustration. Posting as u/Cutenightmares97, the mum said she wants to call her daughter Cassandra, after being inspired to choose the name in a dream.
Despite the "meaning it carries" for her and her partner, the pregnant woman's dad has refused to accept their choice. She explained: "My dad says I am horrible at choosing names. He says I haven’t named my dogs correctly and that I won’t give my daughter a fitting name either.
"Furthermore, he keeps saying I should name my daughter Madison, so we can call her Maddie for short instead of Cassie. His reasoning: so I can say I named her after him. His name is Aaron."
What's more, her dad won't leave the point alone, creating a Facebook poll to ask his friends to share their opinions and approaching people named Cassandra and Madison to ask their preference.
"He also jokes around saying that even if I named her Cassandra that he will still call her Maddie and make her eventually side with him when she gets older, " she added. And the dispute came to a head when the enraged mum blasted her dad, calling him a "Karen".
Confused as to what to do next, she then turned to Reddit to ask: "Did I take it too far by calling him a Karen? Is Madison a better name after all?" "I didn’t realise naming my own child would cause such an uproar in the family and I don’t believe that it should be made as such a big deal," her post concluded.
However, commenters were quick to take the mum's side. One person wrote: "You can name your child whatever you choose." Another agreed: "Your dad is being unreasonable in his expectation to have a say in this matter." And other responders questioned the reasoning behind the dad's pick.
"How are you naming her after him if his name is Aaron and he wants her to be Madison? I have pondered this for the past 10 minutes while reading the post and comments, but I just don’t understand," read one reply.
A second person asked: "What does "Maddie" supposed to have to do with "Aaron?" to which the mum replied: "Because he is quite 'mad' meaning insane. It’s sort of like an alter ego of his." However, this only further angered commenters, many of whom thought "that's a terrible reason to call her Madison."
