A young mother remains in intensive care with serious burns to more than a third of her body following an incident in Perth's eastern outskirts, where a car was set on fire.
Police were called to the scene, at the corner of Honey Street and Mill End in Mount Helena, at 6.20pm on Friday, where they found a man and a woman with burns.
The 33-year-old woman was rushed to Fiona Stanley Hospital by helicopter, and a 42-year-old man was taken to the same hospital by ambulance for treatment for minor burns.
Police said the pair were married, but separated.
The Mount Helena man was released from hospital and police have since charged him with assault causing grievous bodily harm.
'Serious and life-changing injuries'
Midland District Office Inspector Glen Beros described the injuries the young mother received as "serious and life-changing", and praised the quick response from emergency services and witnesses.
"It's tragic, a young woman has got significant burns to her body, which is going to take a long time to treat, and then the rest of her life she's going to be impacted by that," Inspector Beros said.
"Community members who were on scene immediately, they're going to be affected by what they saw as well as the family of this young lady and the extended family."
Inspector Beros said the woman's three young children were safe and with grandparents.
'She was screaming for help'
A resident of a quiet residential street in the area described finding the woman in a stream in front of her home.
The resident, who asked not to be named, said she heard an explosion and terrible screaming.
"There was just a loud kind of noise, a lot of screaming coming down this way," she said.
"I could hear it was a woman's voice. She was screaming for help."
The resident said she rushed outside and found the woman in the stream with burns to much of her body.
Another of her neighbours was on a nearby bridge trying to help.
The woman said she tried to comfort the injured woman.
"She was terrified," the resident said.
"The slightest noise would make her scream and jump.
"Obviously she was in terrible pain."
The resident said she got a hose and helped keep the woman cool until paramedics arrived.
The alleged offender did not apply for bail when he appeared in a Perth court on Sunday.
He was remanded in custody until his next court appearance on Tuesday.
