The family of a woman fighting for her life in hospital has appealed for information after the car she was driving crashed into a couch on a road near Geelong.
Vicki McKenzie, 74, has been in hospital since Saturday's crash in Bell Post Hill.
Her son, Brad McKenzie, said his mother had lost a leg.
The extent of the rest of her injuries is not yet known.
"It's hard to believe," Mr McKenzie said.
"You see and hear about these kinds of things but never think it will actually happen."
Police say the blue Kia Rio was driving east along Creamery Road about 7:50pm on Saturday when it hit a couch.
The car then left the road, colliding with a Hyundai i40 travelling in the opposite direction.
The driver of the Kia Rio — Ms McKenzie, from North Geelong — remains in The Alfred Hospital in a critical but stable condition.
A woman and her two children who were in the other vehicle were taken to hospital with minor injuries.
They have since left hospital.
Mr McKenzie said his mother had not been expected to survive the trip to the hospital.
"She's somehow still hanging in there," he said.
"We still don't know what the outcome will be – it could go either way."
He said his mother was heading home from dropping her granddaughter off when the crash happened.
"A couch is a big item to be missing, so if you do know something please contact the police and help us out."
Police are investigating how the couch came to be on the road.
Detective Senior Constable Paul Stokes said the couch was believed to have come to be on the road shortly before the crash.
"Whether it has fallen off the back of a truck or appeared there otherwise, a couch in the middle of a road is extremely dangerous," he said.
"This poor woman has ended up in hospital in a critical condition through no fault of her own."
Police have urged anyone with information or dashcam footage to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or to submit a confidential report online.
