Woman dies in hospital days after being rescued from flood in the Borders

A woman has died after being rescued from flood waters during heavy rain in the Scottish Borders on Hogmanay.

The incident took place shortly after midnight on Saturday, December 31 when officers were alerted to reports of two women having come into trouble in the overflowing River Tweed in the village of Walkerburn.

Emergency services, including Police Scotland and Scottish Fire and Rescue Service, sped to the scene where the victims were pulled from the river and rushed to Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh to receive treatment.

The 55-year-old woman, who has not yet been named, passed away in hospital on Monday, January 2. The current condition of the other woman is not yet known. Her age and name is also unclear at this time.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: "Around 12.20am on Saturday, December 31, 2022, police were called to reports of people within flood waters at Walkerburn, Scottish Borders.

“Two women were rescued by the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service. Sadly one of the women, 55, died at the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh on Monday, January 2. A report will be submitted to the Procurator Fiscal.”
