Woman dies after being stabbed multiple times, another injured, in Darwin's CBD

A woman has died after being stabbed multiple times with a knife, and another woman has been injured, during an alleged fight on Darwin's popular nightlife strip.

Northern Territory Police received reports about 8:20pm on Tuesday that a woman had collapsed in Mitchell Street in the Darwin CBD, near Shadforth Lane.

Detective Senior Sergeant Paul Morrissey said police and paramedics who attended had found a 28-year-old woman "with multiple stab wounds, bleeding quite heavily".

She was taken to Royal Darwin Hospital (RDH) but died soon after.

He said another adult woman, also with stab wounds, had also been found at the scene, but that her injuries were non-life-threatening.

The 33-year-old was also taken to RDH for treatment, but it's believed she has now been discharged.

Police have taken a 31-year-old woman into custody, but no charges have yet been laid.

Senior Sergeant Morrissey said, based on CCTV footage, police believed the three women and "a group around them" had been involved in a fight on nearby Knuckey Street.

He said they also believed a knife had been used, with the injured women's wounds "consistent with a knife".

"Police were able to identify an altercation involving the two [injured] ladies in Knuckey Street, around the corner from where they were located," he said.

"Further CCTV reviewed identified a further female involved in that altercation.

"She was able to be located and was found some distance away [and] she was taken into custody."

Senior Sergeant Morrissey said it appeared the three women involved in the fight were known to each other, and had been "drinking in a group during the day".

He said the 28-year-old woman had been staying in Darwin at the time, but it was unknown where she was originally from.

An autopsy is expected to be conducted on her body this afternoon.

Mitchell Street had been busy at the time of the fight, Senior Sergeant Morrissey said, and some bystanders had given first aid to the 28-year-old woman before she collapsed.

The incident is being investigated by the Major Crime Squad.

The crime scene has now closed, but Senior Sergeant Morrissey said officers were continuing to review the scene and CCTV footage.

Police are urging witnesses or anyone with information to come forward.
