Woman dies after being hit by ute near Queanbeyan

A 48-year-old woman has died after being hit by a car near Queanbeyan on Sunday morning, NSW police have confirmed.

Emergency services were called to Bicentennial Drive in Jerrabomberra, at about 8.15am on Sunday after a woman was struck by a silver Nissan Navara utility vehicle.

The woman had already died at the scene.

Inspector Danielle Byrne from the Monaro Police District said the woman appeared to be walking alone on Sunday morning when the incident occurred.

Community members were among the first on the scene before emergency services arrived, Inspector Byrne said.

She was unable to confirm whether the woman was on a footpath or attempting to cross the road when she was hit.

"We believe the pedestrian was walking this morning, the finer details of exactly where are something that is currently under investigation," Inspector Byrne said.

Investigations into the crash were underway but it was unlikely the driver and pedestrian were known to each other, Inspector Byrne said.

"I do urge all community members to be safe on our roads, be careful out there, be careful of pedestrians," she said.

Motorists were asked to avoid the area, and road closures were in place as emergency services assessed the scene.

The road conditions had returned to normal by Sunday afternoon.

The driver, a 54-year-old woman, was the sole occupant of the vehicle and was taken to Canberra Hospital with minor injuries.

Police were informed the driver also allegedly hit a white Toyota Hilux parked at the scene.

The driver was set to undergo mandatory testing.

A crime scene was established and examined by the crash investigation unit.

NSW police is urging anyone with information about or footage of the incident to contact Queanbeyan Police Station or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
