ONE woman has died, and a man and two young children have been injured, in a two-car crash near Maitland on Monday.
Emergency services were called to Old Maitland Road at Bishops Bridge at about 2.15pm on September 2 after reports multiple people had been involved in a collision.
Police were told an SUV and a ute had crashed, trapping the driver and sole occupant of the SUV, a woman believed to be aged in her 40s.
Multiple paramedic crews rushed to the site but the woman could not be saved and died at the scene.
She was yet to be formally identified on Monday afternoon.
The driver of the ute, a man aged in his 30s, and his two passengers, children aged one and six years old, were taken to John Hunter Hospital.
They suffered injuries police believed to be non-life-threatening.
A crime scene was established and Hunter Valley police have launched an investigation into how the crash happened.
Old Maitland Road, about six kilometres west of Maitland between Majors Lane and Boundary Road, has been closed in both directions.
It was expected to remain off limits for several hours while emergency services and police work.
A report will be prepared for the Coroner.
